The Role
As the Acoustic Laboratory and Experimental Manager, you will coordinate a small technical team to organise and oversee experimental activities in research programs relevant to underwater acoustic signatures. The role encompasses support to a range of experimental activities, which may include field or sea trials, across vibration and acoustics topics that are covered by the Acoustic Signature Control group. Examples of these could include underwater sound radiation of vibrating structures, flow noise measurements of buoyancy driven models, modal testing to understand vibration dynamics, or instrumentation to measure sound and vibration on board maritime vessels. You will work with researchers in the group to develop experimental work programs and related equipment that will help us to understand underwater acoustics and noise generation and to provide data to validate models. As part of this role you will manage a laboratory equipped with a comprehensive range of experimental acoustic equipment and infrastructure.

About our Team
The successful applicant will work in the Acoustic Signature Control group, one of the groups in the Maritime Division of DSTG. We work across a number of science areas relevant to the underwater acoustic signatures of maritime vessels. We make use of a variety of computer-based tools for modelling and analysis, and have experimental facilities such as a comprehensive range of sound and vibration measuring equipment, a large water tank and an anechoic chamber. Together with our Defence, university, industry and international partners, we help ensure the operational effectiveness of current and future submarines and surface ships for Navy.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a person with demonstrated experience and technical background relevant to the support of experimental activities in acoustics and vibration. You will have the ability to coordinate experimental activities, work with teams and manage a variety of laboratory facilities to contribute to research programs. You will need to be highly motivated and a self-starter with the ability to work under limited guidance. You will need to be able to liaise with other teams internally and externally to DSTG, including to collaborate with industry and university partners. You will have sound written and verbal communication skills that will enable you to interact with partners and present program outcomes effectively.

Application Closing Date: 11.30PM (AEDT) Thursday 11th November 2021
