The Role

There are two roles:

  • Military Cyber Effects Analysis and Tooling Specialist
  • Military Cyber Effects Modelling and Experimentation Specialist

Both of these positions will advance the science and technology of military cyberwarfare for the benefit of the Australian Defence Force. You’ll join a team of scientists and engineers researching the application of cyber effects for military advantage, across the full stack of software, firmware and hardware relevant to military cyber systems.

For the Military Cyber Effects Analysis and Tooling Specialist role you will advance reverse engineering, network protocol analysis, and program analysis technologies pertinent to the research and analysis of cyber effects. Duties include:

  • Researching and architecting tools and techniques which support the generation of effects in cyber-physical systems.
  • Identifying capability gaps within existing cyber security analysis tool kits and developing new capabilities to address these gaps.
  • Developing a deep understanding of the state-of-the-art analysis research across the classified and unclassified community.
  • Conducting experimentation to validate utility of the aforementioned tools and techniques.

For the Military Cyber Effects Modelling and Experimentation Specialist role you will champion the development of an integrated military cyber reverse-engineering pipeline supporting human-in-the-loop analysis-to-effecting techniques, hardware-in-the-loop interfaces to model relevant military cyber properties, high-fidelity software-based military data-link models, and install and maintain specialized military hardware. Duties include:

  • Conducting experimentation to validate the utility of cyber effects in simulated mission environments.
  • Developing a deep understanding of military data links and how these should be modelled.
  • Integrating hardware-in-the-loop systems and emulation capabilities for diverse CPU architectures into simulation environments.
  • Identifying capability gaps within this high-fidelity environment and developing corresponding tools and techniques.

About our Team

The Cyber and Electronic Warfare Division (CEWD) leads Australia’s science and technology research associated with digital and electronic warfare threats in the information environment and across the electromagnetic spectrum. The Division develops S&T to sense, interpret and shape the information environment to better understand, and assist in deterring and responding to, these threats through science and technology that helps shape, deter and respond to these digital and electromagnetic threats.

Within CEWD, the Cyberwarfare Operations Branch (CWO) undertakes research and development to help Australian Defence develop an effective cyber warfare capability that enables fight-through in a contested cyber environment.

Within CWO, the Mission Protection and Effects (MPE) team delivers science and technology that enables the ADF to fight through attacks and execute missions in the face of contested cyber environments.

MPE also conceives, researches, and demonstrates advanced concepts that leverage mission, doctrine, acquisition, and operational contexts to achieve military cyber effects.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidates will have experience or aptitude, and passion, for cyber security, computer science, artificial intelligence and software engineering. Your knowledge and competencies should include some or all of the following:

  • Ability to think conceptually, to structure, analyse and solve complex problems through sound research and engineering practices
  • Knowledge and/or experience of software, firmware, and hardware reverse engineering, and network protocol reverse engineering and analysis
  • An aptitude or track record for conducting research and development
  • An appreciation of the complexity and inherent susceptibilities of military cyber technologies
  • Skills in software or hardware development relevant to the role
  • The ability to work both as a member of a team and individually
  • The ability to inspire, collaborate, and communicate with influence

Specific to the Military Cyber Effects Analysis and Tooling Specialist role: You will possess research skills or aptitude to conceive, design, architect and develop tools and techniques to understand, analyse, characterise and affect opaque cyber-physical systems. Competency in machine learning techniques or program analysis is desirable.

Specific to the Military Cyber Effects Modelling and Experimentation Specialist role: You will possess research skills or aptitude to conceive, design, architect and develop high-fidelity cyber military simulation environments that support prototyping and evaluating cyber effects. Competency in military cyber simulation environments would be well regarded.
