The Role

The Assisted Cyber Vulnerability Analysis Researcher conducts research and development in the field of cyber security for the benefit of Australian Defence. You will be part of an S&T team engaging in the development of new tools and techniques to address the challenges in the analysis and assessment of threats to military cyber systems and capabilities, including directed software, firmware, and hardware threats. You will develop new knowledge through undertaking applied research, engineering and development into tools and techniques that can be used to assist the ADF to perform cyber vulnerability analysis and assessments of military systems.

Duties include:

  • Conceiving and leading research that will enable increasing the scale and tempo of ADF Cyber Vulnerability Investigation Team activities.
  • Conducting experimentation to develop tool candidates and validating the experiments through ADF engagement.
  • Reporting on the progress and outcomes of research and development through research publications.
  • Undertaking cyber vulnerability analysis and assessment of military cyber systems.

About our Team

The Cyber and Electronic Warfare Division (CEWD) is responsible for Australia’s science and technology research associated with digital and electronic warfare threats in the information environment and across the electromagnetic spectrum. The Division develops science and technology to sense, interpret and shape the information environment to better understand these threats. The Division also assists in deterring and responding to these threats through science and technology that helps shape, deter and respond to these digital and electromagnetic threats.

The Trustworthy Military Systems (TMS) Science & Technology Capability (STC) is a work area that undertakes research and development to identify, mitigate, and counter the effects of untrustworthy ICT components, supporting the ADF's critical cyber systems to operate correctly.

The Assisted Red Teaming Discipline is a small team that undertakes research into tools and techniques that will assist the ADF to methodically assess the vulnerabilities associated with cyber systems and equipment entering/in service.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have experience or aptitude in cyber security, cyber vulnerability analysis, computer science, and software engineering. You will have the research skills or aptitude to be able to conceive, design, architect and develop new tools and techniques that can address the challenges in the analysis and assessment of threats to military cyber systems.

To be successful you will have a mix of the following competencies:

  • Ability to think conceptually, to structure, analyse and solve complex problems through sound research and engineering practices
  • Track record of leading research and development in a relevant role
  • Knowledge and experience of penetration testing, software and hardware reverse engineering, or cyber vulnerability discovery and analysis
  • An understanding of the complexity and inherent vulnerabilities in modern cyber technologies
  • Skills in software or hardware development transferrable to the role
  • Work independently, and also as a member of teams
  • Communicate clearly, succinctly and with influence
