The Role
Under limited guidance from the Discipline Leader Global Naval Structures, you will:

  • Contribute to the development of naval structures research (in areas such as ultimate strength analysis, fatigue assessment, non-linear hydro-structural responses, data driven approaches) to international standards.
  • Build and sustain a network of internal and external research partners across academia, industry and Government.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships, contribute to the development of initiatives including the provision of scientific research and development advice, to support Defence decision making in relation to the acquisition of new naval platforms, as well as platform capability upgrades.
  • Generate new knowledge related to naval architecture and ship performance, and understand different methods for applying knowledge to establish the best method, to produce enhanced capability for Defence.
  • Deliver high quality scientific reporting including briefs, publications and presentations.
  • Work collaboratively, and operate as an effective team member.

About our Team
The Naval Architecture and Platform System Analysis Group is part of the Maritime Division. The Group leads research and development of advanced tools and methods to assess the whole-of-vessel performance for the Australian Defence Force. We support Defence in design assurance activities and the transitioning of innovative methods to Royal Australian Navy to increase availability, reduce costs and assure seaworthiness. We achieve this by partnering with both international and local organisations to remain at the cutting edge of scientific developments in whole-of-vessel performance including: seakeeping; multi-vessel interactions; operational loads; whole-of-vessel performance; structural response; integrated model based systems analysis and design trade-off studies.

Our Ideal Candidate
You have:

  • A strong working knowledge of marine structures, offshore structural engineering and naval architecture.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in using Finite Element Method software packages to solve global structural responses.
  • Interest in applying reduced order, machine learning and data driven techniques.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in instrumentation and experiments of marine and offshore systems at model- or full-scale.
  • Familiarity in using MATLAB, Python, or similar programming language for data analysis.
  • You can effectively work in transdisciplinary teams, and can communicate complex technical results and their implications to a variety of stakeholders.
  • You are able to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop a clear understanding of the methodology and practices to achieve strong outcomes for Defence. You can provide advice and assistance on the method of task completion to team members.
