The Role
The role of Director Science & Technology Program (DSTP) is to provide high level advice and support to the Chief Maritime Division (CMD) and the Maritime Division (MD) Executive Management Team in maintaining oversight of the Defence client science and technology (S&T) program.
The DSTP is expected to actively seek strategic opportunities for the Division and contribute in shaping S&T capability through developing and maintaining strong relationships and collaboration within, and across, Defence, industry and academia, helping to ensure that the division is building deep strategic partnerships. The DSTP is expected to adopt a forward leaning and proactive approach in maintaining an awareness of strategic opportunities for the Division both internal and external to Defence.
The DSTP reports directly to CMD and is responsible for developing and reviewing the division’s work program, project performance and for preparing associated presentations for delivery by CMD. The DSTP may be required to represent the Chief and other senior Divisional staff, as required, at client related forums, program committees and/or meetings.
The DSTP is expected to build and maintain close working relationships with other DSTP’s, S&T Project Leaders, Navy, and the DSTG Portfolio Office. This is essential in order to ensure the development of an effective divisional work plan that will result in securing required resources that best meets client strategic priorities and requirements. Interpret and translate information between customers, Australian Defence Force personnel, senior management and scientific teams to align strategic goals and project outcomes.
The DSTP will lead a proactive team of highly professional individuals and be able to respond to well defined risk management plans in support of the Divisions S&T program. This requires the ability to shape response to meet the challenges of the complex programs of effort. The position will oversee and determine the best course of action for the application of resources and scientific developments to meet Defence requirements, in line with the “More Together” approach.
About our Team
DSTG’s Maritime Division provides technologies and scientific and technical (S&T) expertise to deliver the capability edge to the war fighter and enhance the operational performance and survivability of defence platforms in the maritime domain. The division applies the latest naval technology, and undertakes analyses of the effects of their integration on the overall effectiveness of maritime systems. The Director Science Technology Program Leads a small team that facilitates and plans for strategic consideration across the Defence domain, including Industry and academia.

As the ideal candidate you will be a highly professional individual that is able to work in dynamic and complex site agnostic environment within Defence. You will be experienced in a high level strategic planning environment and be able to articulate complexities in a manner that is easily understood across a range of domains. You will be able to represent senior executive members within high level Defence and political forums. You will also be able to draw alignments across both Industry and Academic engagements that support ongoing strategic scientific initiatives and development. You will have effective leadership skills in the management and supervision of a small team of highly professional individuals.

- Effective representational and liaison skills
- The ability to apply sound judgment and make good decisions
- Engage and influence Defence senior leaders and provide the key link between senior executives within the research environment
- Working collaboratively, build and sustain effective relationships that support research initiatives across multiple domains.
