Canberra - ACT

The Role
We are seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to serve as our next Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Defence SES Band-3 Chief Information Officer (CIO). The CoS operates with a high degree of autonomy and serves as an advisor, driving organisational communication, collaboration, and alignment. The role is ideally suited to a proactive, detail-oriented, well-organized, strategic thinker with excellent communication skills across all levels of the organisation. The position should be viewed as a strong development role for aspiring SES which would be supported with strategic level professional development opportunities.

The CoS is responsible for exercising centralised coordination of quality and timely administrative and business functions across CIOG, and for organisational management, planning and support based on the priorities of the CIO. The CoS drives and tracks key Group and Defence enterprise initiatives/issues, and liaises with the offices of the Secretary, CDF and senior Defence stakeholders (including Ministerial offices, senior government and industry counterparts).

About our Team
The Defence Information and Communications Technology (ICT) footprint is one of the largest, most diverse and complex in the Southern Hemisphere. As such, CIO Group has a blended workforce (APS, ADF, contractors) of approximately 5,000 personnel who support the Defence mission globally. Over the next five years the Group will manage some $5 billion of Defence capital projects, which includes a full suite of cutting edge ICT programs to enable the critical reform initiatives under way across Defence and to deliver capabilities to support the ADF mission. In that context the CoS works closely with the CIOG Executive team to help plan, administer and facilitate organisational outcomes and priorities. In this role, there will also be substantial opportunity to engage with a full range of APS agencies and industry partners.

Additionally, the CoS manages a small front office team which engages closely with a range of broader enabling functions.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a candidate that is able to think strategically, set and prioritise busy workloads, identify risks and opportunities and collaborate effectively in a Whole of Government setting to achieve results. The CoS must have a sound understanding of the machinery of Government and a proven ability to achieve results in a Whole of Government setting. While beneficial, there is no direct requirement for a background in ICT or national security.

The successful candidate will be able to work effectively with a full range of senior stakeholders, and across multiple fields, to drive results. They will be capable of independently identifying where business improvements can be made regardless of where they may exist. Additionally, the successful candidate must have exceptional analytical, written and oral communication skills (with experience with key briefing formats) and a proven ability to manage relationships. They must be flexible and able to multi-task in a busy environment.

Application Closing date: Friday the 20th of May 2022
