Your Role

Defence Chief Information Officer Group ICT Architecture Branch is looking to hire multiple positions with in the bands APS 6, EL1, and EL2 across multiple areas within the branch:

  • Cyber and ICT Security;
  • SAP;
  • Cloud and Infrastructure; and
  • Standards and Architecture Practice. 

Defence is seeking strongly motivated individuals with drive, integrity and a passion to support Defence, including the ADF, in delivering its national security objectives. As an architect in the Chief Information Officer group (CIOG) you will have the opportunity to work with major Defence capability projects.  The projects range across capability streams such as Land Combat and Amphibious Warfare, Maritime and Anti-Submarine Warfare, Strike and Air Combat or even Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Electronic Warfare, Space and Cyber.  

ICT Architecture responsibilities include: 

  • Establishing and maintaining effective Defence Enterprise Architecture; 
  • Establishing and maintaining architectures and roadmaps in line with Defence ICT and Information Management Strategies; 
  • Translating Whole-of-Government, Defence and ICT Strategic guidance into unambiguous architectural direction and guidance; 
  • Establishing, reviewing and maintaining architectural principles, guidelines, standards and patterns; 
  • Ensuring enterprise-wide compliance with architecture standards and fit-for-purpose ICT solutions in fixed, mobile and deployed environments Business modelling, business process analysis / design and management of whole-of-Defence activities; and
  • Manage preferred tools, set standards, and defined architecture practice services in Defence; 

To be effective in these roles you will think strategically and work interdependently with other Defence functions, and be a strong team player to achieve effective outcomes. This will require highly developed communication and relationship management skills.

Our Ideal Candidate

As an ICT Enterprise Architect you will work under broad direction to undertake complex research, analysis and design activities associated with the Defence enterprise.  As the ideal candidate, you will:

  • Work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives. 
  • Have experience and comprehensive knowledge of research, analysis and design and are responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of products and policies within the enterprise architecture field. 
  • Build holistic views of Defences strategy, processes, information, and assets and apply this knowledge and ensure that Defence and ICT are aligned. 
  • Strategically assess Defences current capabilities, translate business strategy and objectives into an operating model and work towards identifying required changes in capabilities and emerging technologies relevant to Defence's business outcomes.
  • Build Relationships and engage with stakeholders, manage expectations and concerns to develop a shared understanding of the business benefits and risks to achieve outcomes.
  • Be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
  • Take the initiative for achieving outcomes, progressing work, reviewing performance and focusing on identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Work with independence, under broad direction, and set work tasks that align with the strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes. You may be required to plan, lead and manage a team and exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes.

Our Team

ICT Architecture Branch is responsible for ensuring that Defence has a modern, secure and scalable enterprise Information and Communications Technology (ICT) architecture to support Defence business and military operations. It is transforming Defence's ICT architecture for the future ICTAB is comprised of five directorates; 

  • Directorate of Defence Capability Architecture; 
  • Directorate of Information, Integration, Applications and Engagement; 
  • Directorate of Platform Architecture;
  • Directorate of Infrastructure and Cloud Architecture;
  • Directorate of SAP Architecture;
  • Directorate of Security Architecture; and 
  • Directorate of Standards and Architecture Practice.  

Each will be a slightly different focus and stakeholder group but all with the same mission in mind – to enable Defence to meet its outcomes using modern, secure and scalable enterprise Information and Communications Technology (ICT) . There are multiple positions available within the various directorates of ICTAB.

Desirable Qualifications, Experience or Training

The following prior knowledge, relevant experience or training will be considered highly desirable: 

  • A relevant qualification from an Australian University or TAFE institution (or overseas qualification) would be highly regarded. 
  • Technical background/experience preferred in Cloud and Infrastructure, Cyber, Security, SAP, and Architecture Standards.
  • Knowledge of architectural frameworks and methodologies such as TOGAF and DODAF2. 
  • Excellent communication skills and stakeholder relationships.
