This exciting role involves inspiring a small high-performing team of scientists and researchers that contribute to the development of science and technology in the domains of multilingual text and content analytics to high international standards. The ideal applicant will have experience and a passion for computational linguistics. You will represent DSTG on Australian and international groups within the text and content analytics domains. This role will contribute to a culture of innovation that drives our More Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy.

As the Text Analytics Team Lead, you will:

  • Lead a research program to develop multilingual text analytics for processing, enriching and translating unstructured text content; as well as build linguistic resources, language models and advanced content analytics solutions.
  • Develop initiatives on priority science areas relating to multilingual text and content analytics for Defence and national security agencies.
  • Provide high-level technical and administrative advice in the field of multilingual text and content analytics.
  • Supervise and mentor staff to promote a healthy culture that values staff, innovation and excellence in science.
  • Manage allocated resources, set work area priorities, manage workflows, develop strategies and evaluate business outcomes.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships and play a key role in building relationships with Defence and national security agencies, and their international equivalents, as well as academia and industry.
  • Report research findings to Defence partners and the scientific community through high quality scientific reports, briefs, publications and presentations.

About our Team
Intelligence, Surveillance and Space Division (ISSD) undertakes internationally-recognised research and development into technologies aimed at enhancing national capability for Defence and national agency decision makers.

The role is within Identity Intelligence group, within Intelligence Analysis branch in ISSD.

Identity Intelligence works closely with Defence and other elements of Australia’s national power to deliver tools and technologies that better prepare Defence to respond to grey-zone activities. The group enhances Defence’s video, imagery, and multilingual text and speech capabilities to identify and characterise persons of interest and detect misinformation and disinformation within contested information environments. The group also aims to understand and defend the vulnerabilities inherent in deploying new identification technologies and the information they are applied to.
