Your Role

We are seeking an exceptionally talented Computer or Data Scientist to join a multi-disciplinary team consisting of scientists and software engineers that contributes to the development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions within Defence.

The AI Standards & Governance discipline undertakes research into contemporary systems, processes, approaches and methodologies required to manage data and deliver AI appropriately and responsibly at scale and pace into Defence.

The discipline is currently developing a prototype ModelOps pipeline for accelerated AI delivery. It has previously developed a prototype DataOps pipeline to support data management and data quality in support of artificial intelligence and machine learning outcomes.

The discipline is also developing guidance on responsible and ethical AI frameworks and providing thought leadership in this area to ensure Defence not only develops the right technology, but is also in a position to deploy it in the right way. Our work will include a focus on areas such as trust, bias, data management and accountability.

Depending on your background, your role could focus on one or more of the following:

  • Data architectures such as data fabrics and data mesh
  • Delivery pipelines such as DataOps and ModelOps
  • Data management, data quality and data-centric AI
  • Responsible AI

Given the breadth and cutting edge nature of our work, you will have significant autonomy to set a research agenda of interest to you, subject to operational requirements.

You will work closely with leaders and researchers in a team within an environment which provides strong mentoring to fast track the development and broadening of your skills.

About the team
Joint Warfare and Operations is an analysis branch within Joint & Operations Analysis Division. We have a proud history of supporting ADF operations and leading Defence thinking around command and control (C2) at the operational level.

Our mission is to apply relevant research to address the operational challenges presented by Australia’s strategic circumstances. In particular, we enhance warfighting effectiveness through the development of leading-edge C2 systems, decision-making technologies, and concepts and capabilities that support agile warfighting.

We are a diverse and rapidly growing team which contains specialists across computer science, data science and software engineering. We actively foster a culture of collaboration, scientific exploration, experimentation and continuous improvement. We embrace agile and lean innovation methodologies and emphasises technical exploration of emerging technology.

Historically we have provided decision support prototypes to warfighters, most recently through Operation Bushfire Assist and Operation Covid-19 Assist. We provide opportunities for a long standing career where you will be supported to grow your expertise through learning and developmental activities.

Our team culture aligns with the set of Defence Values and Behaviours as we maintain accountability for leading by example.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will bring a diverse skill set to the role. Ideally, your background in data science or similar will give you an understanding of the technical backbone required to allow the sustainable and repeatable delivery of AI solutions, data governance and associated policies.

This might be complemented by experience or interest in philosophy, responsible AI, psychology or similar. Postgraduate qualifications in any of these areas would be desirable. But we want applications from diverse and interesting candidates rather than candidates who fit a particular academic mold, so if you have a background in any of these areas, please apply.

In addition to your subject matter expertise, we are seeking a candidate who:

  • Has excellent stakeholder engagement skills
  • Can lead projects
  • Is a great team player
  • Has a natural curiosity to explore cutting edge designs, technologies and work on interesting problems in a high-impact environment.

You will have a desire for innovation, transforming concepts into capabilities for Defence.

Application Closing Date: 1 July 2022.
