The Role
We are after a dynamic and enthusiastic team member with science and technology experience who is keen to influence and implement policy, strategy and governance for Australia’s second-largest publicly funded research agency.

This exciting role is central to setting the direction of science and technology for Defence and will be critical to shaping the direction of Defence’s innovation, science and technology enterprise. In this role, you will build on your science and technology skills and broad awareness of Government and Defence needs, to drive science policy direction. You will use your understanding of Defence’s strategic context to develop approaches for DSTG to respond to future challenges. 

Through personal and team research, you will ensure that world leading best practice shapes DSTG’s policy and strategy approach. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage with whole of Government initiatives and other Government departments on policy matters relevant to Defence science and the Australian research ecosystem.

About our Team
You will be part of a diverse team central to DSTG who are actively engaged in a range of strategy setting initiatives driving ‘More Together’. The team works closely to lead and implement the strategic direction for the Chief Defence Scientist and is involved in ensuring DSTG research efforts are aligned with Defence and whole of Government strategic priorities and interests.

You will also have a critical role as part of this team to articulate science and technology objectives and priorities across Defence in order to shape longer-term directions. In this team, you’ll engage broadly across Defence and with other Government departments to advocate for Defence science and technology ensuring it is well placed across government priorities and initiatives.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will be skilled at analysing and navigating issues, identifying and implementing innovative solutions to complex problems, and achieving outcomes. You will display professional judgement, provide advice and argue persuasively for the strategic importance of Defence science and technology.

Your well-developed communication skills will enable you to negotiate and manage key stakeholder relationships and develop complex briefing material to support the Group, Defence and whole of Government objectives. You will work well with others to achieve common goals, with the flexibility to work within a team or independently to meet competing priorities and drive work through to completion.

As a leader you will be skilled at managing workloads and team members, capable of leading staff to develop, grow and learn. You will have a science background relevant to Defence and experience with the Australian science and innovation ecosystem.
