The Role
This is a rare opportunity for a Social Worker or Psychologist to be part of a dynamic Client Response Team in the Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Office (SeMPRO) and contribute to Defence’s effort to prevent and reduce the impact of sexual misconduct. Established in 2013 in the Department of Defence, SeMPRO assists people impacted by sexual misconduct and delivers education on sexual misconduct.1800 SeMPRO is a 24/7 confidential advice and support service staffed by psychologists and social workers in SeMPRO’s Client Response Team.

SeMPRO’s Client Response Team provides immediate and confidential help to all Defence personnel, available via telephone, email or text message, using client-focused, trauma-informed principles. This service is available for current or ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members, APS employees, Defence contractors, ADF Cadets, Instructors or Officers of ADF Cadets, commanders, managers, colleagues, friends, or family members who have been impacted by sexual misconduct.

As a SeMPRO Client Response Team Professional, you will assist with strategies to improve clients’ wellbeing and promote their physical and psychological safety. Using your expertise, you will help navigate the next steps by talking clients through their choices for Defence and civilian healthcare and support services. You can also provide referrals for services that are in a client’s geographic area. You will help clients understand the reporting process, and can be available to support a client through an investigation phase and legal processes if requested. As a SeMPRO Client Response Team Professional, you will provide advice to commanders and supervisors who are managing a person impacted by sexual misconduct or anyone receiving a disclosure of sexual misconduct. You may also provide debriefing for individuals exposed to potentially traumatic material in the workplace.

Additionally, as a SeMPRO Client Response Team Professional you have the rewarding opportunity to deliver education to personnel in support of Defence’s sexual misconduct prevention efforts. You will provide subject matter expertise for Defence policy and processes across a range of psycho-social risk and well-being initiatives. Opportunities also exist for your professional development and engagement with national and international partners in our collaborative efforts to reduce sexual misconduct. SeMPRO also funds professional registration fees and monthly professional supervision for our social workers and psychologists.

About our Team
SeMPRO is a central part of Defence’s cultural change initiatives that promotes help seeking, encourages reporting and supports the prevention of unwanted sexualised behaviours. The SeMPRO team is dynamic and multi-skilled, and includes mental health, research and evaluation, education and communication professionals.

SeMPRO offers confidential support and advice services to personnel directly impacted by sexual misconduct; assists commanders, managers, and others, to respond to incidents promptly and sensitively; debriefs personnel working in sensitive areas; and develops and delivers education products on sexual misconduct prevention and management.

Our Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, we are looking for a capable and confident mental health professional and proactive team player with a client-focused and trauma-informed practice framework, the ability to address the needs of a range of Defence clients via a range of mediums, strong assessment and documentation skills, commitment to professional standards, proficiency in using technology to enable communication, and attention to detail to ensure data integrity.
