Assistant Director-General Security

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is seeking a highly motivated, outcome driven senior executive to fill the position of Assistant Director-General Security, based in Canberra ACT.

The position will report directly to the First Assistant Director-General (FADG) Corporate, and will be responsible for leading and managing a branch that delivers physical, personnel, information and ICT Security for ASD, Australian Geospatial Organisation and Defence Intelligence Organisation.

Effective, risk based and proactive security is a critical enabler for ASD to achieve its signals intelligence, cyber and cyber security missions. Without effective security across the physical, personnel and ICT domains, the three agencies cannot achieve their critical mission.

You will hold a central role across three intelligence agencies, lead certain security policy and practices across Commonwealth agencies and contribute to the development of intelligence and Government security policies in an evolving threat environment. This position works closely with the ASD leadership team to ensure security is integrated into all ASD activities and capabilities. It provides direction and oversight to the Security Branch to develop policy, education programs and awareness activities, conduct security risk and vulnerability assessments and incident response, design, implement and manage security capabilities and provide ongoing assurance and security service management.

In this position you will demonstrate leadership qualities, and build trust and cooperation, working in a highly sensitive environment. We are looking for an agile leader who will bring and implement ideas that will increase collaboration, performance, innovation and accountability to our team, to our stakeholders and to our customer agencies as you develop and implement security projects and initiatives. You will receive great support, and to be successful you will need to be adept in:

  • Thinking strategically with the ability to communicate and execute ideas, and demonstrate value to the team, stakeholders and our customers
  • Working in a fast-paced environment, and managing short notice tasking and critical investigations against ongoing priorities
  • Creating, planning, and managing security projects within defined schedules, budgets and scopes of work
  • Working within key Commonwealth and industry guidelines, policies and practices
  • Understanding and applying emotional intelligence and awareness to your work environment
  • Identifying and implementing reforms and innovations to improve project and team performance.

The successful applicant will also have the demonstrated ability to operate in accordance with, and actively promote ASD’s values and the Defence Leadership Behaviours, which will continue to be adopted and implemented within ASD. To be a strong contender, you will be self-aware, positive in considering and respecting a diversity of ideas and perspectives, and have the courage to challenge the status quo when it does not serve the required outcome. You will be innovative, consultative, resilient and personally accountable for the quality of advice and the delivery of results.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for engagement, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen. This is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo security assessments to the highest level and must be able to be cleared to Top Secret Positive Vetting.

To discuss the requirements of this position, after first reviewing the selection documentation, please telephone Kylie Bryant, FADG Corporate, on 02 6265 0205.
