Senior counsel assisting the royal commission Rowena Orr is summing up the insurance hearings of the banking royal commission.

Ms Orr has outlined a litany of wrongdoing in the insurance sector, and will raise some proposed penalties for those involved.

She started the day by questioning Financial Services Council chief Sally Loane for an apparent lack of knowledge about parts of the sector she is meant to represent.

Ms Orr also questioned Robert Whelan, CEO of the Insurance Council of Australia, about the regulation of general insurers — home, contents, cars, travel.
