$15 million for WA literacy and numeracy fund
The Federal Government has announced that selected Western Australian schools will participate in the new Improving Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership (ILNNP).
The 235 schools across the state will share in $15.8 million to help students in Years 3, 5 and 7 who are struggling with reading and numeracy.
Federal Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett, said that the new partnership builds on the previous initiatives.
“This investment recognises that improvement of literacy and numeracy is essential to helping young people achieve at school and contribute to a strong economy and prosperous future for Australia,” Mr Garrett said.
The funding will be used by schools to implement evidence-based literacy and numeracy approaches including:
- early intervention and assessment programs
- building principal capability
- whole-school planning and improvement
- case management
- use of technology
- Professional learning for teachers in the use of data
- Professional learning in teaching literacy to students for whom English is an additional language.
“NAPLAN data shows West Australian students who took part in the previous partnership improved their scores, so our investment is having a real and positive impact,” Mr Garrett said.
