Abbott takes aim at green power
Former prime minister Tony Abbott has interjected into Australia’s renewable energy debate.
Mr Abbott published a piece in News Corp papers over the weekend calling for renewable energy targets to be scrapped.
He said current efforts to double Australia’s renewable energy supplies by 2020 would be a “death knell for the heavy industries of... South Australia and almost certainly will destroy the aluminium industry everywhere”, and send electricity prices soaring.
“Ending any further mandatory increase in the use of renewables will mean a huge fight in the Senate, but at least the government will be on the side of lower power prices and more jobs, while Labor will be stuck on a dangerous limb with the Greens,” Mr Abbott wrote in The Australian.
Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg says the Government has no plans to change the target.
Labor's energy spokesperson Mark Butler says it is the latest example of ongoing miscommunication about renewable energy.
Mr Butler said price spikes have more to do with an unregulated gas market than renewable energy.
While renewable supplies have been blamed for high power bills in South Australia, Mr Butler noted that price spikes happen in every state during the summer.
“Every time there's a hiccup in the industry, the hard right of the Liberal Party tries to blame it on renewables even when, frankly, renewable energy has nothing to do with the problem people are focused on,” he told the ABC.
