AEMO Chair Drew Clarke has informed the Federal Energy Minister of his intention to retire and stand down from the company’s Board in November 2023.

Mr Clarke has chaired the AEMO Board since November 2017, and the group says his guidance has been critical in recent years as AEMO continues to manage a once in a generation transition of Australia’s energy system.

AEMO CEO Daniel Westerman thanked Mr Clarke for his service to the energy sector and consumers over many decades, and said his wise words and calm approach will be missed.

“Drew’s time as Chair of AEMO coincided with the aftermath of South Australia’s system black event, fundamental change to the east coast gas market, and the suspension of the National Electricity Market in June last year,” Mr Westerman said.

“Throughout his time in the Chair, Drew has drawn on decades of experience to both steer AEMO and work with CEOs and the Board on how to best manage the system in the best interests of energy consumers.

“It is testament to Drew’s commitment to serve households and businesses across Australia, that after a distinguished career in the Australian Public Service, he agreed to serve as Chair of the nation’s market operator and system planner.

“I will personally miss Drew’s advice and guidance, and wish him well in his retirement,” he said.

Mr Clarke’s term as Chair will likely end toward the end of 2023. A search process will commence in coming weeks for AEMO’s next Chair.
