Deal signed on cross-border DNA swap
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to allow DNA information from Australian crime scenes to be searched by UK crime-fighters, and vice-versa.
Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan and the British Minister of State for Immigration and Security, James Brokenshire inked the deal this week, as part of efforts to set up a multi-national DNA Search sharing network.
The MoU could open the door for a program which will see Australia, the UK, the United States and Canada enhance the framework known as the International DNA Search Request Network.
Mr Keenan says the hyper-networked state of the world creates criminal threats that go beyond borders.
He said the new MoU supports Australia's commitment to international law enforcement cooperation.
“We will continue to seek opportunities for further exchange of DNA and other biometrics data to support domestic and international criminal investigations,” Mr Keenan said.
“By working together, we will maximise our effectiveness and ensure we can make global headway in the fight against transnational crime.”
The UK’s Mr Brokenshire says information will be given out in a secure and proportionate manner, to help solve serious cases.
