The Albanese Government has appointed Gavan Reynolds AO as the new Australian Border Force (ABF) Commissioner. 

He will officially assume the role on 10 November 2024, succeeding Michael Outram APM, who will retire the previous day.

Mr Reynolds, who recently served as the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) first Chief of Defence Intelligence, has held a range of high-profile positions such as Australian Military Representative to NATO and the European Union, Head Military Strategic Commitments at the Department of Defence, and service in Afghanistan with the International Security Assistance Force.

His appointment comes at a time of increasing complexity in border protection, and he is expected to bring his extensive experience to guide the ABF through current and future challenges. 

“It is a privilege to lead the Australian Border Force and the dedicated people protecting the national asset that is our border. I look forward to working closely with the Department of Home Affairs and across Government to deliver prosperity, security and unity for Australia,” Reynolds said.
