The Federal Government is poised to pass its plain packaging laws for cigarettes through Senate.

The legislation will ban the use of logos and ensure all cigarettes are sold in plain, olive green packaging.

Although the Federal Opposition will support the legislation, it is will vote against the associated changes to trademark laws.

Tobacco companies have responded by reiterating their threats of legal action, with industry spokesman Scott Macintyre railing against the legislation, saying that the Federal Government will be obliged to compensate the industry.

"We've invested billions of dollars into these brands. Unfortunately, it looks like the government is pushing us down that path," Mr Macintyre told the ABC.
