The Federal Government has pledged $3.5 million to support Stolen Generations survivors through community-led healing services.

The funding aims to bolster the efforts of Stolen Generations organisations in delivering wellbeing and cultural healing workshops, on-Country camps, and importantly, documenting the experiences of survivors.

The $3.5 million investment is set to enhance the support available to these organisations over the next two years and will be managed through The Healing Foundation’s Collective Healing Grants program. 

The government's commitment extends to the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme, which addresses the calls for redress made in the Bringing them Home Report. 

This scheme supports survivors removed from their families and communities in the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory before self-government, and Jervis Bay Territory. 

In just over two years, more than 1,600 applications for redress have been received, acknowledging the pain and trauma of those taken from their families. 

Of these, over 900 applicants have met the eligibility criteria.

The Scheme also offers survivors the opportunity to receive a Personal Acknowledgement, allowing their stories of removal and its impact to be formally recognised. 

To date, 37 Personal Acknowledgements have been delivered, with another 97 in progress. 

With applications closing in February 2026, potential applicants are encouraged to contact the Scheme.

Minister Burney highlighted the significance of the Apology to the Stolen Generations in 2008, which acknowledged the trauma and grief suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people due to past government policies, particularly the forced removal of children from their families. 

Assistant Minister Malarndirri McCarthy urged survivors and families who may be eligible to apply for the Scheme, stressing the importance of community organisations in supporting survivors. 

“This funding, announced today, will enable community organisations to continue their important work supporting survivors of the Stolen Generations and help the healing to occur,” she said.
