Truss targeted in equality campaign
A protest is on in Queensland this weekend to get one man to change his mind.
The Noosa Spring Carnival rally will focus specifically on asking Wide Bay MP and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to accept marriage equality.
Mr Truss is considered “a real enemy of the LGBTI community,” according to organiser Robin Bristow.
Mr Bristow says Mr Truss is taking an antiquated line on gender and sexuality, and should be made to realise that legalising same sex marriage will help change outcomes for young LGBTI people.
“LGBTI youth are six times more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual youth,” he told reporters.
“If you look at the statement by [former Victorian Premier] Jeff Kennett from Beyond Blue, he clearly links the lack of marriage equality to the effect on mental health in youth and he urges all politicians to act urgently on this.”
The Noosa Council website says 10 to 15 per cent of the shire's population is LGBTI, but campaigners say the local council is not outspoken enough.
“The gay and lesbian community in Noosa have heard nothing from the council so far in regards to [the council's] social inclusion policy in regards to gay and lesbian residents,” Mr Bristow said.
“Especially, the youth and the aged want to hear something from the Noosa Council for a change.”
The Noosa Spring Carnival this weekend is the region’s second event this year protesting marriage inequality.
The event will feature speeches from LGBTI advocate Shelley Argent, as well as speeches from the Greens, the Labor Party, and the Australian Sex Party.
“We'll also be reading out a letter of support from Warren Entsch, who's the Liberal party Federal MP, who supports marriage equality,” Mr Bristow said.
More information is available at the event’s Facebook page.
Meanwhile, Federal Liberal backbencher Eric Abetz says the push for marriage equality within the LNP is an “unhelpful ambush” that will damage party unity.
