The latest employment figures show that around 10,000 positions were generated in October, down from 20,000 in September, but failing to make an impact on the official unemployment rate.

The ABS reported the number of people employed increased by 20,400 to 11,451,200 in September, but has since experienced a slump in job generation.

AMP’s chief economist Shane Oliver said he expects the rates to stay the same.

"Unemployment has of course trended up from a low point of 4.9 per cent ... so I think the broad trend in the unemployment rate is up," Mr Oliver said.
