What is the role?
Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Cloud Engineer.
The processes will also be used to create a merit pool for future opportunities.
Job opportunities will be available Australia wide, however some travel maybe required. Successful candidate will be able to work from the closest AFP headquarters in the respective state/territory, and will have reporting timelines to management located in Canberra.
Successful applicants will be required to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the AFP business and the impact of roles and functions undertaken in relation to the organisation’s reputation to effectively manage operations.

- Demonstrated experience in managing Private Cloud Platforms such as VMware (desirable).
- Demonstrated experience in managing Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon Web Services and relevant industry certifications (essential).
- Understanding of governance best practice including FinOps across a Hybrid Cloud environment (desirable).
- Driving an Automation first approach, developing and documenting best practices and strategies for application and infrastructure delivery in a hybrid cloud environment (Highly Desirable).
You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
The Cloud Services Team within the Chief Information Officer (CIO) Command is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of a range of cloud capabilities that directly supports collaboration across the organisation, delivers cloud-based solutions to support operational and business outcomes. The team is a multi-disciplinary team focused on delivering business value and continuous improvement by leveraging innovative cloud-based solutions.
Roles and responsibilities of the team include:
- Providing operational support and technical advice through the development, deployment, and maintenance of cloud-based solutions.
- Driving an Automation first approach, developing and documenting best practices and strategies for application and infrastructure delivery in a hybrid cloud environment.
- Troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures.
- Employ exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to see and solve issues before they affect business productivity.
- Collaborating across multiple teams within CIO Command and the business to evaluate and identify optimal cloud solutions.
- Managing cloud environments in accordance with Information Security Manual (ISM) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
- Implementing Public PROTECTED Cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Platform.
- Maintenance and enhancement of platform architecture and sustainment of Public PROTECTED Cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure, M365 and/or Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Platform.
- Understanding of governance best practice including FinOps across a Hybrid Cloud environment.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Relevant formal qualifications from a recognised tertiary institution, or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience.
- Demonstrated experience across Microsoft solutions such as Microsoft Azure, M365 and Teams.
- Understanding of automation frameworks and tools such as Ansible and Terraform.
- Understanding of governance frameworks and principles in a cloud environment.
- Experience with/knowledge in managing cloud environments in accordance with Information Security Manual (ISM) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
- Implementing and supporting Public PROTECTED Cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Platform.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon Web Services certifications
- Experience with maintenance and enhancement of platform architecture and sustainment of Public PROTECTED Cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure, M365 and/or Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Platform.
Additional Information
- This position is an AFP Band Level 8.
- This position has been advertised in all major capital cities. Successful candidates can either work remotely from home or from an AFP state office. Regular travel to Canberra will be required.
- AFP employees are required to have received a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used).
