$123,159 - $147,828 (plus super)
Edinburgh – SA

The Role
This role is suitable for candidates from diverse academic backgrounds and skillsets such as operations analysis, computer gaming, systems engineering and international relations who can apply their skill to the development of analytical wargaming. In this role you will lead the development of new analytical wargames and wargaming systems to address priority defence needs. To achieve these outcomes you will apply a sound knowledge of different analytical Wargaming methods, relevant to seminar Wargames, matrix games, structured manual games and computer based Wargaming.

Your development efforts will directly contribute to:

  • Force Design and capability modernisation
  • Guiding the development, and lead the application, of distributed computer-based analytical wargaming
  • Analytical Wargaming development, conduct and analysis, including quality control
  • The Defence Analytical Wargaming Network (DAWN) and help guide its strategic direction.

You will work closely with diverse key partners and stakeholders across DST Group, Defence, allied nations, industry and academia to ensure that analytical wargame development addresses current and emerging priority needs and ensure our wargaming capabilities are world leading.

To be successful in this role you will understand that the application of analytical wargaming to Defence problems requires the development of flexible and innovative approaches, especially considering the uncertainty of future operating environments and the inherent complexity of the dependencies between capabilities, concepts and force structures. Wargaming and simulation form key tools in gaining this understanding.

Some interstate and international travel will be required from time to time. Regular engagement with military personnel is a requirement of the position .

About our Team
Our team partners with Army in providing analytical support to the design of the future ADF and delivering Wargaming and red teaming support to Defence decision makers.

Using our expertise and knowledge, we support the analysis and evolution of concepts, structures and capabilities for the force structure for the future Joint Land Force. Through the development and application of Wargaming methods and red teaming, the group analyses the complex military systems to understand gaps in current capability and opportunities for new capabilities.

We conduct targeted and collaborated research into analytical Wargaming through the Defence Analytical Wargaming Network (DAWN), including the development of new Wargaming systems for novel problems, improvements to the effectiveness and usability of distributed analytical wargaming, research that underpins the scientific rigour and validity of Wargaming models and multi-method approaches linking analytical Wargaming with other analytical techniques.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an accomplished wargamer and operations analyst who will drive the development of analytical Wargaming.

You will have a national or international reputation, specialised knowledge and considerable experience in a relevant field, which will enable you to forecast future Defence needs and understand the opportunities S&T can provide in meeting these needs.

Your client focus will enable you to understand their priorities and balance the client delivery program with long term, underpinning research and development.

As a capable collaborator, you will develop and sustain external relationships with industry, universities and international organisations, and create opportunities for your team to work cooperatively with other teams on intersecting projects.

Our ideal candidate has demonstrated leadership skills, able to build a high performing team which uses its collective talent, appreciates a diversity of ideas, and builds trust which leads to more innovation, increased success in problem-solving and improved communications.
