Electromagnetic Warfare and Intelligence Systems (EWIS) Land Systems Program Office (SPO) is seeking a high motivated and skilled Engineer with a record of delivering complex technical and engineering outcomes.
You will have exceptional stakeholder engagement, excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation skills, with a proven history of building, maintaining and growing productive empowered teams.
You will lead a program of acquisition and sustainment activities for complex systems that are critical to the ADF to meet its operational challenges into the future. You will show flexibility to respond to the changing context and shifting priorities of the Defence environment and the agility to realign resourcing to meet new demands. You will be a leader providing support and guidance to your team to ensure they are sensitive to Defence strategic direction and equipped to excel in their capabilities.
We are seeking candidates with a diverse range of experience in engineering, including a demonstrated understanding of the Defence Industry sector in Australia. You will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective employment of complex equipment and systems by the ADF.
The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

EWIS Land SPO has a high performing culture and the successful candidate can expect to be challenged in the role and supported by an inclusive and considerate team and leadership group. EWIS Land SPO delivers and supports capabilities to the ADF and external Government agencies which include Force Protection Electronic Countermeasures (FPECM), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Robots, Deliberate Route Clearance, and Tactical Electronic Warfare systems.
Our Ideal Candidate
EWIS Land SPO is seeking a Chief Engineer who is able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to apply established engineering principles, techniques and methods to solve problems relating to the acquisition, sustainment, design, development, integration and evaluation of EWIS Land Capabilities.
Key attributes and experience we are looking for:
- Substantial track record of successful management of engineering projects using appropriate engineering practices;
- Ability to manage complex system installations, integration and technical regulatory requirements;
- Demonstrated focus on timely resolution of issues;
- A thorough understanding of engineering disciplines;
- Demonstrated experience managing teams in a complex environment;
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with ability to negotiate and build relationships with stakeholders;
- Sound commercial and business acumen and a demonstrated understanding of the Defence Industry sector in Australia; and
- High-level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve tasks and business objectives.
This position is required to be located in Canberra.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance, but may commence role with a lower clearance. Failure to attain the Negative Vetting 2 security clearance may necessitate a role change.
