The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) is set to commence on October 14.

The newly established federal review body aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in government decision-making, replacing the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).

The legislation for the ART was passed in May, highlighting the government's commitment to a more effective review system.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus says the new review body is sorely needed.

“The new, fit-for-purpose federal review body will replace the Administrative Appeals Tribunal [AAT]. An effective administrative review system is essential for the tens of thousands of people who seek independent review of government decisions each year - decisions that have major and sometimes life-altering impacts on their lives,” he said.

Justice Emilios Kyrou AO, the current president of the AAT, will oversee the transition to the ART until the end of his term.

All matters currently before the AAT will automatically transition to the ART, ensuring continuity.

Further appointments to the ART are anticipated, as the government continues to bolster the tribunal's capacity and expertise.
