Gallagher gets Government Services
The newly appointed Minister for Government Services, Katy Gallagher, has described her new role as an honour.
Officially appointed this week, Gallagher expressed gratitude for her predecessor, Bill Shorten, acknowledging his efforts to strengthen the sector and address critical issues, including the Robodebt controversy.
In an official statement, Gallagher emphasised the importance of a robust public service for delivering essential services such as Medicare, Centrelink, and veterans' support.
“All Australians rely upon a strong and well-resourced public service that should be there to support them when they need it,” she said.
Gallagher noted Shorten's achievements in uncovering the Robodebt scandal and improving the operational capacity of Services Australia.
She also reflected on their collaborative efforts on MyGov and digital services to streamline access to government programs for Australians.
Addressing future challenges, Gallagher criticised the Opposition's proposed cuts to public services, characterising them as detrimental to essential support systems.
“You cannot cut the public service without cutting the services Australians rely on every single day,” she argued.
This appointment comes amid rising debates on the future of public service funding, with Gallagher positioning herself as a defender of the sector against what she has described as potential threats from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's policies.
