Former Australian Labor leader Bill Shorten is stepping down from his political career today.

The move follows his earlier decision not to seek re-election as the Member for Maribyrnong, a role he has held since 2007.

Mr Shorten, 57, is currently serving as Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Government Services.

He will also vacate these positions as he prepares to assume the role of Vice Chancellor and President at the University of Canberra.

His transition comes as the university faces significant challenges at the university, including financial instability and staffing cuts.

Reflecting on his time in politics, Mr Shorten expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the electorate of Maribyrnong and Australians nationwide.

The Albanese Government has announced a cabinet reshuffle to address Mr Shorten's departure.

Amanda Rishworth will take on the role of NDIS Minister, supported by Dr Anne Aly in a newly established junior ministry for the NDIS.

Senator Katy Gallagher will oversee Government Services in addition to her current responsibilities.

Advocates have expressed apprehension over the consolidation of the NDIS and social services under a single minister.

In his new academic role, Mr Shorten says he aims to advance the accessibility and quality of higher education in Australia.
