The Federal Government has announced a new coordinated, whole-of-government approach to research funding, which it says will ensure that Australians will continue to reap the rewards of unprecedented investment in science and research.

Launching the National Research Investment plan earlier this week, Federal Minister for Science and Research, Senator Chris Evans, said the new national planning process will enable a coordinated approach to research investment to ensure it meets the nation’s needs.

Senator Evans said the investment plan will support future funding decisions by the Government and sets a path to achieving national research goals.

"The Australian Research Committee will use the plan to develop a set of strategic research priorities and to guide future government funding to ensure it is delivered most efficiently," Senator Evans said.

"To remain competitive, we need to improve the way we use our research to boost productivity, grow the economy and deliver better social, economic and environmental outcomes for all Australians.
