Blair Comley has been chosen to lead the Department of Health and Aged Care, taking over from Brendan Murphy.

Comley’s five-year term will commence on July 17 according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Albanese has described Comley, a former federal and state government official, as having a “distinguished career” in public service and praised his strong economic qualifications and proven leadership in dealing with complex issues.

Currently a director and partner at EY Port Jackson Partners, Comley previously held the position of secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet under former NSW Premier Glady Berejiklian from 2014 to 2018.

He has also served in the federal public service, including as secretary of the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism, and the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

Comley's appointment has been welcomed by Health Minister Mark Butler, who highlighted his extensive experience and leadership in navigating complex challenges.

Comley was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2012 for his contributions to public policy development.

Outgoing secretary Brendan Murphy was recognised for his service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Comley's appointment will be recommended to the governor-general by the prime minister.
