New scheme spreads DVOs
The new National Domestic Violence Order Scheme (NDVOS) has come into effect.
Under the NDVOS, domestic violence orders issued in any Australian state or territory will now automatically be recognised and enforceable nationwide.
With police attending hundreds of thousands of family violence incidents each year, the new system should be able to ensure perpetrators cannot be protected by simple state lines anymore.
Existing state and territory laws protecting victims and affected family members from domestic violence have not changed, but local police will now be able to enforce the conditions regardless of where the DVO was issued.
The following video gives and overview of the new system.
