A state government is set to change the way tenders are awarded in an effort to reduce the rising unemployment rate.

The Tasmanian Government has announced it will take on recommendations from the state’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry to boost jobs and bring down the 8.4 per cent unemployment rate.

The State Government has heard thirteen recommendations from the Chamber of Commerce. Chamber representative Michal Bailey says it is all about local involvement.

“We know that a dollar spent in Tasmania by the Tasmanian Government is more valuable to our state than a dollar spent on the mainland or overseas,” Mr Bailey said.

Premier Lara Giddings is preparing to launch the Government’s Buy Local policy next week, which includes adopting the approach to tender awards usually used during emergencies such as bushfires, where eligible recipients are found from the nearest suitable source.
