The Position

CSIRO Health and Biosecurity in Sydney, NSW, has an opening for an experienced Computational Biologist. CSIRO is Australia's national science organisation and one of the largest and most diverse scientific research organisations in the world.

CSIRO has a long history in DNA methylation technology and biomarker development, including the co-invention of bisulfite-sequencing and together with partners, we have translated a DNA methylation based diagnostic for colorectal cancer recurrence, available now on the US market.

As the successful candidate you will join the award-winning Precision Health Diagnostics team. Presently, we are developing DNA methylation-based diagnostics in areas such as cancer, metabolic disease and brain trauma. In this role you will lead the analysis of methylome data for biomarker discovery in the execution of internal and external projects for clients.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
  • Analyse and characterise large DNA methylation datasets in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.
  • Work effectively as an integral member or leader of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to undertake independent scientific investigations and carry out/delegate associated tasks under broad guidance from more senior Research Scientists/Engineers.

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate and or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as computer science, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular biology or related field and ideally at least 6 years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of probability and statistics or machine learning.
  • Advanced knowledge of publicly available bioinformatics software tools, with an emphasis on next-generation sequencing.
  • Demonstrated experience with next-generation sequencing data and related tools (e.g. Samtools, GATK, etc).
  • Demonstrated experience with epigenetic data (e.g. Bisulfite-sequencing, CHIP-Seq, MBD-Seq, ATAC-seq, DNAse-seq).
  • High degree of proficiency in R.
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux.
  • Familiarity with basic molecular biology principles
