Paint Chemist and Lead Auditor

The position:

In the position of Paint Chemist and Lead Auditor with CSIRO, you will have the opportunity to undertake activities across a wide range of exciting projects.  As part of the Materials Performance team in the Infrastructure Technologies group, you will work with paints, chemicals and equipment within a strong culture of safety.  You will undertake a combination of office-based assessments, laboratory testing (AS1580 series) and off-site auditing in industrial environments, ensuring operation in accordance with relevant regulatory and CSIRO HSE policies.

An integral part of this role involves work as Lead Auditor for the Verification Services team which provides certification and accreditations schemes to paint manufactures and applicators/contractors.  You will undertake auditing based on the requirements of ISO 9000 (Quality), 14000 (Environmental) and 18000 (OHS) series, ISO 17025 (Laboratory), as well as the specific APAS and PCCP scheme requirements and specifications.

Specifically you will:

  • Set up, perform and process a variety of paint tests and measurements.
  • Manage the Laboratory and Quality system to maintain NATA accreditation and ensure compliance within CSIRO HSE regulations.
  • Liaise with clients to determine needs, provide quotes and initiate projects.
  • Represent the paint assessment capability within CSIRO and to our industrial clients.
  • Carry out audits for the APAS and PCCP schemes.

Location:      Clayton (Melbourne) Victoria
Salary:          AU $80k to AU $91k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will have recognised graduate or postgraduate qualifications in Chemistry plus recognised Lead Auditor or Coating Course qualifications (Diploma minimum). You will also have:

  • Experience working in a NATA accredited laboratory.
  • Professional behaviours and well developed communication, presentation and report writing skills.
  • Knowledge of paint and coating systems, related technologies, test and manufacturing methods.
  • Experience in a variety of test methods used in all aspects of paint evaluation, specifically AS1580.
  • Experience as a Lead Auditor and/or testing consultant.
  • Ability to show initiative in a commercial environment with income targets.
  • Good knowledge of APAS and PCCP standards and specifications.
