The Position
We are seeking an epidemiologist, modeller or data expert with expertise in animal health to join CSIRO’s Food Systems and Global Change Group as part of the Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBAD) project. Based in Brisbane, Australia, we are a multi-disciplinary team of systems specialists that partner to deliver agricultural outcomes for improved global food and nutrition security. Our work is framed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and we collaborate with the world leaders in this space to build more efficient and effective food systems through improved agricultural productivity, diversification and resilience.
The GBAD project aims to quantify the livelihood, environment, and societal impacts of animal disease and has initially received funding for a two-year pilot period. CSIRO leads a work package on production system impacts in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The Animal Health Modeller will evaluate the production impacts of animal health problems (disease and management related) at the household level, scaling up to the regional level and linking to global analyses. They will work closely with a global team of livestock and value chain specialists to achieve the project goals. The initial focus of the work package is dairy, pig, and poultry production systems in East Africa.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed research team to meet the GBAD project objectives
- Review existing literature and databases to understand current livestock production systems and issues that limit productivity.
- Collate country-level data on animal populations and production systems for quantifying the burden of animal diseases.
- Develop a bottom-up classification of livestock production systems globally, and in specific countries.
