The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking, or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work.

The CSIRO Applied Porous Materials Team, is seeking an enthusiastic individual with a chemistry or materials science background to join the team. This team has a rich array of fundamental and applied projects underway and is seeking to appoint a person that can apply technical skills, problem solve, manage instrument equipment, and be challenged to design and build devices.  The successful applicant will strengthen the engineering capability of the team and build on their portfolio of skills.

Your duties will include:

  • Under technical direction, designing and performing experiments and routine laboratory analyses, designing new processes or apparatus by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertake modifications to methods requiring some innovation.
  • Performing some non-routine analyses or technology development activities using a range of techniques, often working on several parallel and competing tasks.
  • Responsibility for maintaining laboratory consumables and scheduling and instructing staff in the use of shared equipment.
  • Ensuring safe laboratory practices and protocols are followed at all times.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.
  • Other duties as directed.

Location: Clayton, Melbourne VIC
Salary:   AU$66,163 - AU$84,207 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  24 month specified term, Full-time

To be considered you will need:

Essential

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

  • Undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated practical and/or industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling chemicals.
  • Evidence of participation or leadership in safe work practices in laboratories.
  • Demonstrated experience in using analytical instruments.

Desirable   

  • Background in Biochemistry and/or experience working with Biomaterials
  • Experience managing and maintaining a laboratory.
