Are you an experienced behavioural researcher looking for a new challenge – transforming hearing healthcare?

The National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) is seeking a Head of Dept. to lead its Behavioural Science Research Department - to set the direction and lead a research portfolio on hearing health and human behaviour.  

This is a full-time research role, managing a growing team of behavioural scientists at NAL to develop and manage high-impact research that will improve hearing health care and the lives of people with hearing loss.

Research areas include behaviour change in relation to engagement with hearing healthcare services, prevention of noise-induced hearing loss, and other aspects of hearing health that involve decision-making as well as the association between hearing and cognitive/ psychosocial outcomes.

The department’s aim is to apply a behavioural lens to new and existing hearing health issues, creating innovative solutions or improving the effectiveness of previous approaches.

NAL ( is a world-leading research centre funded by the Australian government’s Dept. of Health. With a strong focus on applied and cross-disciplinary research, NAL enjoys a uniquely significant reputation as an international leader in audiology and acoustics /hearing healthcare research and has had a worldwide impact on prevention and rehabilitation activities.

Located in Sydney Australia, NAL’s facilities form part of the Australian Hearing Hub on the Macquarie University campus NAL has a focus on collaborative research, working with teams from both academic and industry partners. Findings from NAL research are utilised by Australian government and international partners.

As department head your work week may include such tasks as….

  • Develop new research initiatives that meet NAL’s strategic objectives.
  • Contribute to concurrent research projects at NAL, in a leadership or advisory capacity– Build partnerships for collaboration on behavioural research.
  • Mentor, advise and lead the Behavioural Sciences Research staff.
  • Provide leadership to NAL as a member of the NAL Leadership Team.
  • Present and publish research results, providing thought leadership on the application of behavioural science to hearing health.
  • Lead grant applications.

The ideal candidate will possess:
Ph.D. or Master’s in Psychology, Behavioural Science, Behavioural Economics, or a related field.


  • Experience in applying behavioural science solutions to real-world problems to improve people’s lives.
  • Track record of quality peer-reviewed publications.
  • Existing network of national or international collaborators and evidence of successful research partnerships.
  • Experience managing staff, mentoring and helping others to achieve success.
  • Track record of applying for and winning research grants, tenders, and sourcing funding to support research goals.
  •  Conducting and leading cross-disciplinary research.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and analysing quantitative/qualitative behavioural experiments, preferably in the domain of health,

Prior knowledge of hearing health an advantage, but NAL will also consider any candidates with a strong background in behavioural research keen to apply their existing skills and experience in this growing field.
